How Do EasyReach Products Compare to the new Google Desktop Search?
(See Complete Comparison Matrix Below)
EasyReach welcomes the release of Google's Desktop Search solution. We believe that competition is a good thing and drives the market to higher standards and functionality. Google's Desktop Search solution is a nice starter solution but we believe that if you compare it to either EasyReach Find or EasyReach Professional you will agree with what Steve Manes said in his Forbes magazine article - "EasyReach is the real Find".
It should come as no surprise that Google's solution is very limited in its functionality compared to EasyReach. In some ways it is like comparing Microsoft NotePad to Microsoft Word. Some highlights of the differences include:
- Although Google's download size is smaller than ours, Google's solution requires 2-10 times more disk space than ours after installation and indexing.
- Google supports only a few data formats and specifically Google DOES NOT index e-mail attachments or PDF files.
- Google indexes only on the c: drive. There is no support for additional drives, network drives, USB or CD/DVD drives.
- Google does not provide an easy way to preview results. You must click on each separately and decide if that result is the one you are looking for.
- Google does not cross-reference the information meaning that you can not see all items related to a particular address record or company.
- Google may make your computer susceptible to security attacks (see PC World article on Security Issues with Google Desktop Search).
All users, but especially those who rely on search for business purposes, should note that Google's desktop solution, like its web search, is a basic consumer solution and Google does not provide end user support.
The comparisons below, although not exhaustive, highlight many of the key differences between EasyReach products and specifically those that our users felt are "must have" features in a desktop search product.
